Can you legally carry kitchen knives in Arkansas?

On Behalf of | Jan 21, 2025 | Criminal Defense

Like most people, when you think of kitchen knives, you probably think of preparing and cooking food. You likely don’t think too much about buying a premium kitchen knife as a housewarming gift and traveling with it in your bag.

But kitchen knives are still deadly weapons. So, can carrying one get you in trouble with the law?

What Arkansas law says about carrying knives

You must follow specific rules when carrying knives in Arkansas despite the state’s generally permissive approach. Unlike many states, Arkansas allows for both open and concealed carry of switchblades and other types of knives.

The law focuses on your intent rather than the type of knife you carry. Kitchen knives fall under the same rules as other knives. They count as household or kitchen tools unless you plan to use them as weapons or carry them with the intent to harm someone.

Ways to carry a knife safely and legally

Your reason for carrying a knife matters most when determining if you break the law. Here are a few things you can do to avoid problems:

  • Keep knives in original packaging during transport
  • Store knives in a bag or toolbox instead of your pockets
  • Carry proof of purchase for new knives
  • Avoid bringing knives to schools, courts and government buildings

Moreover, Arkansas law does allow you to carry knives as weapons in specific situations. Two situations in which this may apply include when you’re in your home or business and when you’re “on a journey,” such as a long hike or traveling beyond your county.

Know your knife rights and responsibilities with

Arkansas maintains relatively relaxed knife laws compared to other states. While you can use knives for self-defense when you face immediate danger, carrying them specifically as weapons requires special circumstances.

You shouldn’t face issues when carrying knives for activities like camping, cooking or gift-giving. However, if you encounter legal problems for carrying a kitchen knife, it’s better to seek professional legal advice from an attorney rather than the internet.
