3 tips for moving on after divorce

On Behalf of | Jan 31, 2021 | Family Law

Divorce marks a big change in your life. After you end your marriage, you may live alone, share parenting time with your ex and even have to adjust to a different lifestyle.

These changes can be difficult to cope with, and you may have a hard time moving on emotionally. To help yourself through this period of life following your divorce, there are certain strategies you can use that can benefit your mental and emotional health.

1. Work through your emotions

You may experience a wide range of emotions after you get divorced, ranging from anger to sadness and grief. Do not repress these emotions. Instead, allow yourself to mourn the end of your marriage while also finding a way to work through these feelings.

2. Lean on a support system

According to Healthline, approximately 16.2 million adults in the U.S. go through at least one major depressive episode every year. If you start feeling sad or depressed about post-divorce life, reach out to a therapist, close friend or a support group for help.

3. Try something new

Divorce is an ideal opportunity to make changes in your life that you want. For example, you may want to change careers, sign up for a class to learn a new skill or even just try out a new hairstyle.

Whether your marriage lasted several months or several decades, moving on from this partnership can take time. Embrace your new role as a single person and try to learn what you can from the experience.
