Costs associated with a DWI

On Behalf of | Apr 7, 2020 | Firm News

Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal, and the state of Arkansas takes it seriously. Someone with a DWI conviction faces stiff penalties.

The consequences of a DWI stay with the driver for years. One major consequence of this charge is that it is very expensive.

Legal and criminal costs

According to FindLaw, there are multiple financial obligations for the offender. As part of the sentence, a judge often orders the person to pay a fine. Depending on if it is a first or subsequent offense, the fine may range from up to $1,000 to $5,000. These amounts may be more if there was damage to property or another person.

Because the consequences of a DUI are so dire, most people hire an attorney, and these fees can add up. There are also court fees.

Additional costs

Financial consequences extend beyond court-related ones. There is a suspension of an offender’s driver’s license, and this can range from six months to four years. Some people may be eligible for an ignition interlock device during this time, and this requires an installation and monthly fees. An offender must take an alcohol education program, which also costs money.

According to Money Crashers, many people who have a DWI charge will miss some days of work. This time increases with jail time. This results in lost wages and possibly job loss.

There are other fees associated with the driver’s car. These often include impound and towing fees, as well as a license reinstatement fee. Once the driver is able to drive again, there are also increased costs related to car insurance. Companies rate drivers with this conviction as being high risk, so rates can increase substantially for a stated period of time.
